Tendulkar, Dravid hold the key in Sri Lanka

Bangalore: Welcoming Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid's return to One-Day squad, former Indian middle order batsman Praveen Amre said the two stalwarts hold the key to India's success in the ongoing tri-series in Sri Lanka.

"I think with both Sachin (Tendulkar) and Rahul (Dravid) back in the one-day squad, the team will be banking heavily on their experience especially against hosts Sri Lanka, who are very tough to beat in their own back yard. Sachin and Rahul, who have served the country admirably in the past, in turn will be looking forward to give their team a flying start to the season with consistent performances," Amre told Cricketnext.com on Thursday.

"With Virender Sehwag sidelined due to injury, India need to be consistent in their batting. I am sure they can do so with the experience of Sachin and Rahul and the explosive batting of Gautam Gambhir at the top and Yuvraj Singh and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the middle," he added.

"The absence of Zaheer Khan, who has been the spearhead of their bowling since a couple of years, should give the other youngsters like Ishant Sharma, Rudra Pratap Singh and Praveen Kumar a chance to prove their worth even though they have been chipping in with vital wickets but now they have to play the role of match winners," Amre, the Mumbai coach, observed.

"India's fortune hinges mainly on their batting strength and the experience of Sachin (Tendulkar) and the solidity of Rahul (Dravid) should come handy for the team because to succeed on Sri Lankan wickets, one has to have lots of patience and once the team puts up a big score then even the part-time bowlers can do a restrictive job. So according to me India's batting, particularly the contributions from the two seasoned campaigners, will count a lot," Amre added.
